This is a beret so it will lay flat. There is nothing keeping its shape except your head. The opening cannot get bigger but there is a string to pull the opening smaller. It does come with a slight smell though. As others have said, the fabric is thin so you can wear it in warmer weather. Also, I paid extra for domestic delivery but the delivery service was slow. It is not first-class mail but more like ground. They used some smaller shipper who kept it in their warehouse for 3 days without movement.
